Sylhet celebrates Rushanara's victory

Sylhet May 8 (bdnews24.com) – Sylhet residents brought out a procession on Saturday celebrating the victory of Rushanara Ali, elected as the first Bangladeshi MP in the British polls.

The procession, organised by the Sylhet City Corporation, began at around 12:30pm from Nagar Bhaban and ended at the Central Shaheed Minar.

Rushanara was elected as a Labour Party candidate from the Bethnal Green and Bow constituency of East London.

She was born in Sylhet in 1975 and immigrated to London at the age of seven with her family.

A brief meeting was held after the procession at the Shaheed Minar.

Sylhet mayor Badaruddin Ahmed Kamran said victory of a Bangladeshi in the British Parliament had brought great honour to the nation.

The victory has brightened the image of Bangladesh to the world, he said.

The mayor expected that Rushanara would speak in favour of Bangladeshis in the parliament.

Her victory would further strengthen the relation between Bangladesh and Britain, he added.
